What is HDR?

Have you ever photographed an amazing scene or landscape only to find that the result is not so vibrant and impressive as you remember? This is often because your photo lacks “dynamic range”.

Dynamic range is the ratio of light to dark in an image, the difference between the darkest and lightest parts of a photo. For any one scene, your eyes can process a much larger dynamic range (tones, colors and luminosity) than your camera can. As a result, a photo will never reproduce exactly what your eyes saw at the time of taking it. This is especially true when photographing a scene with contrasting light and dark areas, such as a landscape, a sunset – or a solar eclipse!

As the name suggests, HDR (high dynamic range) software focuses on creating a photo with a higher dynamic range, closer to the image that you saw with your own eyes. It typically does this by merging multiple versions of an image with different exposures into a single photo, to capture the lightest and darkest areas of the image. You can then make adjustments, brightening dark areas, correcting overexposure and highlighting particular features of an image. HDR editing can therefore make your photos more lifelike and realistic. At the same time, you can also use HDR effects to transform an image, for example turning it black and white or adding intense color or sharpness.

One of the top features of Eclipse HDR is that the software can create a HDR image either from a single photo or from several photos, making it easier for you to recover lost details in the dark and light areas of your photos.
